Universitas Pembangunan Nasional (UPN) "Veteran" Yogyakarta has a rich history that traces back to the visionary efforts of Indonesia's independence fighters who established the Akademi Pembangunan Nasional (APN) "Veteran," in Yogyakarta in 1958. What began as a single institution gradually transformed into the Perguruan Tinggi Pembangunan Nasional (PTPN) "Veteran" in 1965, marking the beginning of an ambitious expansion that would see the university establish branches across major Indonesian cities including Surakarta, Surabaya, and Jakarta through strategic mergers with existing educational institutions. Throughout its journey, the university navigated numerous organizational transformations, evolving from its original placement under the Department of Veterans Affairs to its renaming as Universitas Pembangunan Nasional (UPN) "Veteran" in 1977, followed by a significant shift to private university status in 1995 under the stewardship of the Yayasan Kejuangan Panglima Besar Sudirman. The institution's story came full circle on October 6, 2014, when UPN "Veteran" Yogyakarta proudly returned to its roots as a state university under the Ministry of Education and Culture, with President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono himself presiding over this momentous milestone in the university's evolutionary journey.
